Hiking in early spring can be really fun! This time we took a hike up Compounce Mountain (which looks over Lake Compounce and the amusement park there) to Julian's Rock. Who was Julian? Why is the rock named after him? You won't find out here, but you will see how fun this hike is! I found this one on All Trails and it's listed as the "Blue and Yellow Blazes to Julian's Rock". On a cold day in January we hit up the Old Leatherman Cave trail in Watertown, CT, and visited the Letherman's Cave! This cave is one of many that he supposedly stayed in, many of which you can hike to in Western CT or Eastern NY. 1/02/2021 - The family decided to take a hike in a nearby nature preserve. Join us! Bent of the River Audubon Center is a 700-acre nature sanctuary and education center located in Southbury, Connecticut. It is part of Audubon Connecticut (a state office of the National Audubon Society) and the Atlantic Flyway, and is dedicated to Audubon's open space and working lands conservation efforts in Connecticut. Visitors are welcome to enjoy trails, nature programs, and conservation-themed events throughout the year. What do you do, during a pandemic, on Labor Day in CT? How about a hike up to one of the best views in the state?! Macricostas Preserve is a fairly high (for CT) peak in Northwestern CT. The hike is a moderate level hike up to some gorgeous lookouts. Join the Sarris family (and especially their little dynamo of a daughter!) as they check out this great spot! Pleasure Beach was once a destination for fun, but then became notorious. In the last several years, the beach has been (and is being) revitalized, with an ambitious plan for a very nice park. On a rainy winter day we decided to go to the U.S. Submarine Force Museum in Groton, CT. The museum has exhibits chronicling the development of the U.S. Ballistic Submarine force, including memorabilia and pieces from old subs. It also features the berth of the USS Nautilus, the first operational nuclear powered submarine (which, among other things, was the first sub to go under the arctic circle). You can go aboard the sub and see what it's like to live on one! The museum is free and is open every day except Tuesday year round.
